DePix and Real-Time Settlement in Brazil

Depix.Online Published on July 27, 2026 11 min read

PIX solved payment speed in Brazil, and solved it well. What it did not solve is final settlement: the money arrives in seconds but can be clawed back for up to 80 days. For sellers, that gap is the whole problem.

There is a common confusion between speed and final settlement. PIX is fast: the money shows up in seconds, at any hour of the day or night. But fast is not the same as final. Money that arrived today can be disputed and leave your account weeks later.

For anyone selling to many strangers, that is where the pain lives: the month's revenue is not what came in, it is what came in and did not go back out.

Brazil in Transition

Brazil has become one of the most dynamic payment markets in the world. According to figures published by the Central Bank, PIX moved roughly R$ 26.5 trillion in 2024 across 63.8 billion transactions, growth of more than 50% year on year.

What PIX Does Not Solve

  • Reversal. The special refund mechanism allows a transaction to be disputed within 80 calendar days. You may already have shipped the product and spent the money
  • Mandatory intermediation. Both ends need an account at a financial institution, and the operation depends on their uptime
  • Data exposure. Every transaction carries the payer's name and part of their tax ID
  • Preventive freezes. The bank can hold funds or freeze the account on suspicion, without notice
  • Night-time cap. Between 8pm and 6am the default ceiling for individuals drops to R$ 1,000 per transaction

Why Real-Time Settlement Matters

Settlement is the moment the money becomes unambiguously yours. In the banking system that moment does not coincide with the arrival of funds: there is a window in which the operation can still be undone. In a blockchain transaction, arrival and settlement are the same event.

Two settlement models

Metric PIX in a bank account DePix in your wallet
Availability 24/7, dependent on the bank 24/7, dependent on the network
Funds arrive in Seconds About two minutes
Final settlement Only after 80 days without dispute At the second confirmation
Intermediaries Sending bank, receiving bank and the scheme None, between wallets
Privacy Name and part of the tax ID travel along Amount and asset confidential on the network
Limits Set by the bank, lower at night Set only at the on and off ramp
Cost per transaction Free for individuals, priced for companies Fractions of a cent in network fees

What Changes for Sellers

  • What you received is final: no dispute after the product has shipped
  • The balance cannot be frozen, because it is not held by a third party
  • No dependence on hours or on an institution's instability
  • You stop exposing your data to every customer you serve

The trade-off is real and must be stated

Irreversibility protects the receiver and exposes the sender. Get an address wrong and there is no refund. And if a customer complains later, the problem becomes commercial rather than banking: no institution will mediate for you. Self-custody is control, and control comes with responsibility.

What DePix Is

DePix is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the Brazilian Real, circulating on the Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain. The network settles in about two minutes, charges fractions of a cent and uses Confidential Transactions, which hide the amount and the asset type being moved.

  • 1 DePix is always worth R$ 1.00, with no swings
  • It is not a speculative asset: it is the Real in another format
  • It sits in your wallet, under your private key
  • It moves without a bank, between any two Liquid wallets

If you have never handled the asset, start with the complete guide on what DePix is.

On Regulation, Precisely

The virtual asset service provider sector got its own rules with Central Bank Resolutions 519, 520 and 521 of 2025, in force since 2 February 2026. Firms already operating have until 30 October 2026 to file their authorisation request with the Central Bank, and may keep operating in the meantime. Because that window is still open, nobody has completed the process, which is covered in the guide to DePix.

How It Works in Practice

Take a R$ 500 sale:

  1. The customer pays by PIX on Depix.Online
  2. You receive 500 DePix in your personal wallet, net of the fee
  3. The balance is yours, with no intermediary able to freeze or reverse it
  4. From there you hold it, sell it back to Real, or swap it for another asset

The exit routes, with the cost and timing of each, are compared in the DePix conversion guide.

Use Cases

Online Seller Handling Many Strangers

Anyone taking payments from dozens of customers a day treats disputes as an operating cost. On each dispute the money leaves the account and the argument moves to the bank. Converting receipts into DePix takes that risk off the table, because a wallet balance cannot be disputed.

Measure before changing everything: if your dispute rate is low, the convenience of direct PIX probably wins. If it is high enough to hurt at month end, the maths changes.

Freelancer Serving Clients Abroad

Getting paid from abroad through banking rails is expensive and takes days, with an FX spread baked in. Receiving in crypto and converting to DePix, the money arrives in minutes. When you need Real, you sell on Depix.Online. When you want to keep part in dollars, you swap for USDT on DepixSwap, without leaving self-custody.

Small Business Reducing Bank Dependence

Monthly account fees, caps that do not keep up with revenue, and review processes that lock up cash at the worst moment. Holding part of the working capital in DePix does not eliminate the bank account, but it reduces exposure to a single institution.

Sending Money Abroad

Buy DePix with Real, swap for USDT or L-BTC on DepixSwap, send to the recipient's wallet and they convert into local currency. The whole operation runs in minutes with negligible network fees. It is far cheaper than a bank transfer, and it does require the recipient to know how to use a wallet.

Fair Objections

“Crypto is risky”

The risk people have in mind is price risk, and it does not apply here: DePix does not fluctuate, because it is pegged to the Real. The risk that genuinely exists is different, and it is operational: losing your private key. Without the 12 words there is no recovery.

“I don't have a crypto wallet”

Creating one takes about five minutes on Blockstream Green, which is free. The public address works like an account number: you hand it out to get paid, and it reveals nothing beyond that.

“I need Real, not crypto”

The exit exists and it is the same path reversed: you sell DePix on Depix.Online and the Real goes to whichever PIX key you name, yours or someone else's. Network confirmation takes minutes, and sending the PIX can take a few hours in some cases.

“I get paid by lots of people I don't know”

That is exactly the scenario where final settlement is worth the most, and also the one demanding the most care about where incoming funds come from. Receiving without chargebacks does not excuse you from knowing who you are dealing with, or from issuing whatever paperwork is due.

The Pieces of the Ecosystem

Three tools solve different parts of the problem, and using all three is not mandatory:

  • Depix.Online converts both ways, PIX to DePix and DePix to PIX, with self-custody and the fee visible before you confirm
  • DepixSwap swaps DePix for USDT, L-BTC and other Liquid assets without you leaving your wallet
  • PixToMe works on the receiving side, holding the PIX for a period before release, which reduces exposure to disputes for sellers dealing with strangers

For most people the first one already covers it. The other two make sense depending on volume and on who is paying you.

Conclusion

PIX solved speed, and there is nothing to fix there. What it does not solve is final settlement, and that is where being paid in DePix comes in: what lands in your wallet is yours at that instant, with no dispute window and no institution able to hold it.

The price is taking custody of your own key and giving up the banking system's safety net. It is not the right call for everyone. For people selling to strangers, getting paid from abroad, or already bitten by a chargeback, it usually is.

If you want to try it, start small: create the wallet, buy a low amount through Depix.Online and run the full cycle once, selling back included. Before that, it is worth reading how the platform's security works and about private payments.
